At the ripe old age of 16, I started working in the bank as a receptionist. I worked with the loans and mortgage department. I then moved to BC and worked for CIBC and then I came back to Alberta and went to work for TD.
I then started working for a collection agency and moved into legal collections. I was thrust into commercial litigation and had the opportunity to learn more about labour law, Human Rights Tribunals, Union strikes and the chaos that could bring up.
I was not enthralled with the criminal aspect, commercial and corporate crime every so often came across my desk. it was interesting.
In 1999, I cut my wages in half and went to work in family law. I stayed in family law for 12 years and decided I needed a break. I ended up obtaining my certification as an English Teacher for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and then went in as a Health and Safety Administrator and became a Peer Auditor to assist companies in obtaining their Certificate of Recognition (COR).
After a little while, I ended up back in family law, where I have remained since 2015.
While I worked in family, I had the opportunity in some smaller firms to learn about Wills and Estates. It was an area that allowed some sleuth work. Looking for Insurance policies from the 1950's and finding bank accounts for some. It is an interesting field. This course however, is more to help people who are left to pick up the pieces, so to speak. I have done it personally but I think helping someone get through it would be such an uplifting experience.
